OSSTF Health and Safety Inspector Job Posting, 2025

The Toronto Teachers’ Bargaining Unit (TTBU) of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, District 12, Toronto, is seeking applications for three (3) OSSTF Health and Safety Inspector positions.

DUTIES – Start Date: 1 July 2025

  • Comply with all duties as outlined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Follow the direction of the TTBU Executive;
  •  Work as outlined in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Occupational Health and Safety Terms of Reference;
  • Consult with and support the TTBU Executive concerning advice given to TTBU Members regarding health and safety issues;
  • Inform Members of the TTBU Executive which sites they will inspect each month as soon as the schedule is known;
  • Attend meetings as required by the TDSB Occupational Health and Safety Terms of Reference, representing TTBU interests;
  • Conduct scheduled workplace inspections at any TDSB site, including Elementary, Secondary, and work areas considered off-site;
  • Investigate accidents, near misses, and report to the Joint Health Safety Committee (JHSC) and the TTBU Executive any source of danger or hazard;
  • Ensure Management takes, maintains and follows up on JHSC Meeting Minutes;
  • Make recommendations to the TDSB regarding occupational health and safety improvements and proactively advocate for changes that will improve worker health and safety;
  • Consult with the TDSB over hygiene testing or asbestos abatement program commencement, and be present at the beginning as required (often outside the regular workday, including evenings and weekends);
  • Consult with the TDSB about the development and implementation of training programs for workers exposed to hazardous materials or physical agents;
  • Be prepared to attend Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development  site visits;
  • Create a Workplace Inspection Report using the TDSB online reporting system;
  • Liaise with Branch Presidents and worksite Health and Safety Contacts;
  • On request of the TTBU President, develop and present health and safety workshops to TTBU Members;
  • Assist TTBU Members/TTBU Executives with WSIB claims and Duty to Accommodate issues;
  • Support and assist TTBU Members/TTBU Executives with work refusals as requested;
  • Support and assist TTBU Members/TTBU Executives with work complaints to the Ministry of Education as requested;
  • Support and assist TTBU Members/TTBU Executive with the completion of health and safety forms, including completion/ submission of Members’ Occupational Health and Safety Concern/ Near Miss forms, Violent Incident reports, Employee’s Report of Accident/Injury, and Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB);
  • Receive and respond to TTBU Member emails and telephone calls, and be prepared to follow up with site visits;
  • Work collaboratively with the TTBU Executive to promote and enhance workplace health and safety;
  • Attend monthly TTBU Council Meetings and Health and Safety Committee meetings;
  • Become and remain current with all health and safety procedures and protocols;
  • Stand for election at the TTBU Council as a representative to the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Assembly (AMPA);
  • Attend and participate in the Branch Presidents Workshop;
  • Take anti-harassment officer training and be prepared to serve as an Anti-Harassment Officer at Council and/ or other events as assigned by the TTBU President;
  • Seek approval of the TTBU Health and Safety Officer, subject to consultation with the TTBU President, for any Time Off for Time Worked;
  • Any other duties as assigned by the TTBU President, which may require travel to off-site or out-of-town locations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The term of appointment is up to two years, commencing 1 July 2025 and ending  as late as 30 June 30 2027.

These are full-time positions. TTBU Members appointed to these positions continue to be TDSB Employees who are seconded from their TDSB positions for the term of appointment. 

You will continue to receive your full teacher salary and benefits.

CRITERIA

Applicants must:

  • Be a full-time TTBU Employee of the TDSB;
  • Be an Active Member of the TTBU;
  • Have demonstrated commitment to the principles of solidarity and OSSTF union values through examples of positive engagement in OSSTF;
  • Have or be willing to obtain Health and Safety Certified Worker Training and refresher training;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, including the Work Refusal procedure;
  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Keeping Our Kids Safe at School Act (as may be amended from time to time);
  • Be familiar with the TDSB Occupational Health and Safety Terms of Reference and related structures and practices;
  • Be capable of undertaking all aspects of workplace inspections, including ladders, working at heights and in tight spaces, walking long distances, and working alone at times;
  • Demonstrate skills in building positive professional relationships, facilitating collaboration and having the ability to work well as a member of a team;
  • Be able to engage in daily travel to numerous workplaces and inspection sites, either by personal vehicle or public transit;
  • Be prepared to work in any inspection area as assigned by the TTBU Health and Safety Officer in consultation with the TTBU President;
  • Be aware that the inspection regimen runs twelve (12) months and that the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meets at a minimum monthly, and inspectors must be available and may be required to work more than the regular Teacher working periods

 The TTBU Executive reserves the right to create a shortlist of applicants to interview. Interviews will be held at 1482 Bathurst Street.  Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email of the date and time of their interview.
