DESCRIPTION:The federal government’s underfunding of services for First Nations children living on reserves has created a crisis situation for these children and their families. Have a Heart Day is a child and youth-led reconciliation event that brings together caring Canadians to help ensure First Nations children have the services they need to grow up safely at home\, get a good education\, be healthy\, and be proud of who they are. Join OSSTF Toronto Black and Indigenous Workers of Colour Committee on Tuesday\, February 5\, for an afternoon of crafts\, letter writing and sweet treats as we send messages to our Prime Minister and Members of Canadian Parliament to ask them to Have A Heart for our first Nation Children.  We will meet at the District’s office on the fourth floor between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM.

DESCRIPTION:On February 14th\, 2019\, we ask members to support the Strawberry Vigil for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls\, which was first held over 14 years ago in Ontario.  The Strawberry Ceremony recognizes that February is out of season for a ceremony involving strawberries\, but the violence women and girls are experiencing is also a disruption in Indigenous communities.  The February 14th ceremony is an opportunity to grieve the loss of beloved sisters and remember the women who are still missing.  \nA community database with information\, memorial tributes and the documenting of murdered and missing women\, girls\, trans and two-spirited people is available at: It Starts With Us.  \nMany local events are also posted on Facebook and Twitter.

DESCRIPTION:The actions of a group of students in Nova Scotia following an incident of bullying\, has created a global movement. When a grade 9 student faced homophobic taunts and threats of violence for wearing a pink shirt\, David Shepherd and Travis Price acted by buying and wearing pink shirts as a sign of support. Other students at the school joined in and amplified their actions\, sending a message that homophobia and bullying will not be tolerated. \nOn February 27\, 2019\, we encourage everyone to practice kindness and wear pink to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying.   2019 Focus is:  Cyberbullying.

SUMMARY:United We Resist - NO CUTS Rally-Toronto Congress Centre
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, February 27 the Tories are gathering at the Toronto Congress Centre in Etobicoke  for a major fundraising event.  We cannot let this government and its supporters think that we will let their regressive policies go unchallenged. Members are encouraged to attend the United We Resist Rally and Demonstration in support of our schools\, and against the Tory agenda to cut $1 billion being held outside this fundraiser starting at 5 pm. \nBuses available\, expenses covered. \nOSSTF TTBU has partnered with the Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT) to rent buses to take Members to this event. Buses will be leaving from Scarborough Town Centre (4:00 pm); Malvern Collegiate (4:00 pm)\, Yorkdale Mall (4:15) and Kipling Station (4:30).  Buses will depart from the rally location at 7 pm to return Members to their point of departure. \n  \nIf you wish to ride a bus to the rally you must register by Monday February 25\, 2019.
